Strong Coffee News – December 2011

WE have so much to be excited about In 2011, Strong Coffee Stage has been brewing up quite a storm! Strong Coffee Stage performed ANTIGONE (our version features just two actors) at the State University of New York at Oneonta. Talented students were invited to help design sound and costumes for the show, and workshops in Partner Acrobatics and Physical Theater were well attended by enthusiastic members of the community and campus drama club. Strong Coffee Stage also was invited to perform ANTIGONE at the Fury Factory Theater Festival in San Francisco. It was great to perform in the Bay Area. We were proud to be the only New England company at the festival.

In May Producing Director Bronwyn Sims was one of 24 artists invited to attend the Creative Capital Retreat in New York City. Creative Capital is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to providing integrated financial and advisory support to artists. Creative Capital’s pioneering approach to support combines funding, counsel and career development services to enable a project’s success and foster sustainable practices for its grantees. It was an amazing retreat with lots of valuable information and networking!

The Vermont Community Foundation also recently awarded a creation grant to Bronwyn to create an original solo play. Not to spoil the surprise, but….ambition, mortality, Amtrak and Ibsen; it’s going to be a great show! We aim to share the work (in progress) with select audiences in the spring of 2012.

Strong Coffee Stage was in residency at The Celebration Barn in South Paris Maine in Autumn. We spent an amazing 2 weeks in the idyllic beauty of Maine working on material and devising and creating new ideas for the coming season. We also performed at The Celebrations Barn’s Hoot n Howl Variety show.

Strong Coffee Stage conducted a guest artist class at Bowdoin College in early October. Students explored acrobatics, partner acrobatics and clowning. Much fun was had by all! We also enjoyed a guest artist residency at Greenfield Community College in late October and early November. We taught a master class in clowning and improv and had a chance to share our personal and professional stories with students in the Theatre 101 course.

The Vermont Arts Council awarded Strong Coffee Stage Producing Director Bronwyn Sims and Artistic Director Patrick Donnelly an Artist Development grant to continue our training as actors in the Le Coq technique of Physical Theatre. We will be traveling to NYC this Summer to immerse ourselves in this training.

Strong Coffee Stage is also excited to be recognized by The New England Foundation for the Arts as NEST Artists. New England States Touring (NEST) provides support to nonprofit organizations based in New England for community-related activities by select New England performing artists from outside of the presenter’s state. Fee support for Strong Coffee Stage productions may be available to nonprofit organizations through the New England States Touring (NEST) program of the New England Foundation for the Arts. Visit for more information.

Strong Coffee Stage will also be attending The Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) Conference this January 6-10, 2012 in New York. We will be showcasing our work in two 15 minute presentations and promoting our company at the conference!
